Every new baby needs special loving care from mother, father, family, and loved ones. During those first few days at home, it can be so hectic and confusing that special loving care is difficult to offer. Mom is exhausted, Dad is unsure, family and friends are ooohing and ahhhing over the little one, who, when not sleeping is wailing. Who brings calm into this family’s life right now?
Enter a postpartum doula or a newborn baby care specialist, who is trained to give baby care, mother care, family care, and love and support to everyone who needs it!
“Dear Marcia: I quickly learned the definition of a postpartum doula; they are part sister, part nurse, part teacher, part cheerleader and all parts friend. I could not have survived those first few weeks without you. Just seeing you walk in our front door, with your calm energy and gentle smile, gave me the strength to continue.” — Robyn S.

Triangle Mothercare, Inc., has served the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill area since 2002, under the direction and leadership of owner and director Marcia Thuermer. Hundreds of babies have had an especially secure introduction to the world because of Marcia and her dedicated doulas and newborn care specialists.
Marcia was trained and certified by DONA (Doulas of North America, International). She has also earned her IBCLC (International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants) certification. She manages the agency as well as working part-time as a doula. In her own words, here is your introduction to Triangle Mothercare:
Sometimes events happen in your life that change your perception about your world. Several years ago my sister was dying of breast cancer and my elderly father’s health was failing. Though they lived several states apart from one another and from me, I was the responsible care provider for both of them. Since I could not spend all my time with either of them I had to find home health care assistance. I was appalled by the inadequate quality of care that was available and the difficulty of finding good help!
After the deaths of these two precious people, my unaccustomed empty hours needed to be filled with meaningful new work, something that was nurturing and fulfilling for myself and others, something that would bring joy into a home.
When I heard about postpartum doulas, I recalled my needs when my son was born and I had little support because distant family members couldn’t help. My research convinced me that nurturing and supporting mothers, babies and other family members was my calling. What a perfect and joyful decision that was!
When I became certified in 2003 the postpartum doula profession was new, waiting to be discovered. I knew that as more families became aware of our profession the demand would grow. As an independent postpartum doula, there wouldn’t be enough of me to go around! I decided to form an agency so we could serve more families, and so that I could offer a professional business model that clients could rely on and trust. So in 2004 I incorporated as an agency and started looking for other trained professionals to work with me.
A doula is much more than a baby nurse or nanny, as her task is to support the entire family in every way needed to ensure speedy recovery for the mother, confidence for her partner, and special education in the care of the newborn. So I choose caregivers who are calm, compassionate, and nurturing women with extensive experience in mothering new families. All go through the TMC training and mentoring program, and our doulas are certified by either CAPPA or DONA. The training covers:

All Triangle Mothercare doulas and newborn care specialists:
In the old days, the extended family provided ample support for new parents and their babies. Now the extended family is far-flung and many new families are left without care at this very vulnerable time. They are overwhelmed, exhausted, and they need mothering! The need for postpartum doulas is growing. Our agency is growing as well. We will continue to provide professionally trained and experienced caregivers that families will welcome into their homes with confidence and trust, knowing that our professionals will bring the highest standards of service to their job.
Every family has different challenges to overcome and each is so vulnerable in the beginning. We will support and nurture them through the difficulties that seem so big at the time but so small when they have been mastered. With the services of Triangle Mothercare, each family will come through their “new baby experience” more confident and empowered to parent this precious newborn child.
Warmest regards,
