Overnight Doulas & Night Nurses are recognized as one of the most vital support services for new mothers.
Hospital stays are so short that mothers (and their partners) have very little time to rest and recover from the birth! They are often sent home exhausted and expected to care for this tiny new baby around the clock with almost no sleep. Even moms who had a planned or unexpected Caesarean delivery are sent home very soon, with surgery to recover from even as the new baby wails for attention. New moms know that if they could “just get a few nights of good sleep…” they could face the sharp learning curve and the physical demands of caring for the new baby… or babies!
If you are bottle-feeding, your Doula or Night Nurse will feed, change diapers and soothe your baby during the nighttime hours so you can get some sleep. If you are breastfeeding, we will wake you when your baby needs to nurse and give you breastfeeding support as needed while you feed your baby. Then you can go back to sleep while your Doula or Night Nurse soothes your baby back to sleep until you need to be awakened again!
One of the indicators for possibility of postpartum depression is sleep-deprivation. Your friends with babies are not kidding when they tell you that you are going to be “more tired than you ever imagined” after the baby arrives. Planning for revitalizing sleep during the early postpartum nights will be a good step to take care of yourself physically and emotionally.
